|Central Jersey DCS Demo Group|
|Greenberg Train Show, Edison, NJ, 27-28 Nov 2004|
On 27-28 November 2004, the Central Jersey DCS Demo Group presented a demonstration of the DCS system at the Greenberg Train Show held in Edison, NJ. We presented the demonstration on a hirail modular layout in the form of an octagon that was 20' across. The curves were very wide, with diameters of 128", 120", and 112". What follows are photos of the layout and DCS demonstrations as well as some videos that we shot at the show.
What do you need to make DCS work? As shown, transformer(s) for power and a DCS system that consists of a Track Interface Unit (TIU) and a remote. The TIU connects between the transformer and the track. Since on a modular layout we have three separate main lines, we use three separate transformers, one for each mainline. We used the Fixed 1, Fixed 2, and Variable 1 channels of the TIU, with one (Variable 2) left over.
Obviously, the food did not agree with Bob! ;-)
The MTH Premier NP Yellowstone was an attention getter all day!
OK, which was more fascinating? The MTH Premier NP Yellowstone or the MTH Premier PRR FF2?
There was always a crowd around the control table, seeing how easy DCS is to hook up
There was no mistaking who we were!
The octagonal layout was quite attractive
An MTH Premier C&O Allegheny makes its way around one of the broad curves
MTH accessories, both static and operating, were featured prominently -- the operating accessories like the dispatch board were run using DCS and the AIU (Accessory Interface Unit)

Now, you don't think I was the only photographer taking pictures, do you?
Two MTH Premier PRR K4s steamers double-headed can puff up quite a cloud of smoke!
Bob can run the entire layout, trains and accessories, from that little remote in his hand
The smoking brewery (a Bob creation) and the operating freight platform were a big hit!
The MTH Premier 2-rail Santa Fe Hudson was a show stopper! How it stays on the track with those tiny flanges....
The MTH Premier PRR FF2 did yeoman service during both days of the demo
Here the MTH Premier C&O Greenbrier (PS1 converted to PS2) and the MTH Premier Santa Fe Hudson pace each other
On the TV we played the MTH DCS video tape and the OGR DCS video tape continuously during both days of the show
The buildings and operating dispatch board got their share of attention
The little guy did a pretty good job blowing the whistle with DCS!
At times, the control area got quite crowded!

"You mean it's THAT simple to hook up DCS?" Yes!
The mighty MTH Premier C&O Allegheny
Three generations enjoying the trains
Time for a little smoke fluid!
The MTH operating Car Wash was a crowd pleaser!
The MTH Premier PRR K4s with prewar decoration
I don't know that I'd want to be that close with an Allegheny barreling down the tracks toward me!
In the following video, if you imagine yourself shrunk by a factor of 48 and sitting in the cab of the MTH Premier PRR FF2 sitting on Track 3, this is very much what you would have seen in a run around the layout. The articulated steamer pulling the tank cars on Track 1 is the MTH Premier Northern Pacific Yellowstone; the steamer pulling the C&O passenger cars on Track 2 is the MTH Premier C&O Greenbrier #614, converted from PS1 to PS2. Fair warning -- this video is >3 minutes in length and even in the highly compressed Real Media format it's over 8 MB in length.
